Lake Wedowee sits on the southwestern
reaches of the Appalachian Mountain range in Alabama, just a
short drive away
from the scenic Cheha Mountain State Park, the state’s highest
elevation. This natural escape is conveniently hidden just west
of the Georgia-Alabama border, less than two hours from most communities
surrounding Atlanta. The lake is also easily accessible from Birmingham,
and is located about 25 minutes south of Anniston, Alabama.
In 2006 the Alabama State Legislature instituted several laws designed
to specifically protect Lake Wedowee’s exceptionally clean
and safe waters. These laws restrict large boats capable of high
speeds and houseboats from operating on
the lake. They were enacted to protect the lake and its users from dangerous
speeds, large wakes, and excessive noise. Not only do these laws protect the
natural beauty of Lake Wedowee they also serve to enhance the value of its
water front property.
Because many areas of Lake Wedowee are owned by the Alabama Power Company, miles
and miles of shoreline remain untouched by development. Most similar lakes in
the Southeast are overwhelmed with development and have dangerous waters with
excessive boat traffic. While there are a few areas on Lake Wedowee that are
in danger of being overdeveloped, the majority of the lake is bordered by pristine
natural forests.
Along with the beautiful inviting lake is the quaint town of Wedowee. Wedowee
retains its small town character and is no hurry to adjust to the urban sprawl
of its larger neighboring cities. It is often said when you drive into Wedowee
it is like going back thirty years to a time when life was slower and more
enjoyable. The folks in town will probably wave to you as you drive by. If
you stop to eat
or shop you’ll undoubtedly strike up a pleasant conversation with one
of the local residents.
If you are looking for a place to escape from the normal rat race of daily life,
why not take a look at Wedowee. We know you will enjoy the small town charm and
relaxed pace of the town and will instantly fall in love with the beautiful protected
waters of Lake Wedowee.
